The key to a consistent fluid stream is ensuring the pump you have chosen can handle the flow rate required. However, there are many instances where you will need to add another chemical element to the fluid stream to achieve the correct end result. For example, adding an acid or caustic chemical to water to get the pH into a desired range or adding chlorine to kill bacteria is a typical application to bring water up to a certain standard before use.
The question is, how do you ensure the fluid stream contains the right amount of chemicals – all the time.
The answer to this pumping conundrum is using a chemical injection pump or chemical dosing pump.
A dosing pump is a small, positive displacement pump, and is designed to pump a very precise flow rate of a chemical or substance into the fluid stream. A dosing pump will deliver this precise flow rate of chemical by drawing a measured amount into a chamber and then injecting this volume of chemical into the pipe or tank being dosed.
Dosing pumps have a large range of applications across a number of industries. This ranges from water treatment systems, agriculture, industrial, manufacturing, medical, food processing and mining.
The application will determine the dosing pump required. Peristaltic pumps are often used in the medical industry for example. Pumping action is achieved by compression of a circular loop of elastomeric hose with two diametrically opposed rotating shoes. This rotational motion forces the fluid in the hose to move ahead of each shoe. When each shoe reaches the end of the loop, the reinforced tube immediately returns to its original shape. This alternating contraction and relaxation creates an almost full vacuum that is able to draw the correct amount of fluid into the pump casing through the inlet piping. An added benefit of using peristaltic pumps is the mechanism can be easily sterilised and / or changed should they become damaged or contaminated.
