Benefits of Glass Lined Steel Tanks

December 16 2024

When it comes to industrial and mining water storage, selecting the right tank material is crucial to ensure durability, reliability, and cost-efficiency. Glass lined steel tanks have emerged as a leading choice across various industries due to their unique properties.

In today’s article, we’ll explore the key benefits of glass lined steel tanks and why they are a smart investment for industrial and mining operations.

What is Glass Lined Steel?

Glass lined steel is a composite material that combines the strength and durability of steel with the protective properties of a fused glass coating.

During manufacturing, the steel panels are coated with a high-quality glass layer and fired in a kiln at extremely high temperatures, bonding the materials permanently. This fusion results in a tank surface resistant to chemical and physical wear, ideal for industrial and mining applications.

1. Durability and Longevity

One of the standout benefits of glass lined steel is its exceptional durability and long lifespan. The fused glass coating acts as a robust shield against corrosion and chemical damage, outperforming materials like steel that can degrade or weaken over time.

Glass lined steel is also engineered to withstand extreme temperatures and pressure fluctuations. Unlike other materials, it resists scaling, pitting, and microbial growth. All common issues that can compromise structural integrity and water quality.

2. Low Maintenance

The smooth, non-porous glass surface prevents sediment and mineral buildup, which is a common challenge in water storage systems. This natural resistance to scaling and debris accumulation means less frequent cleaning is needed, reducing downtime and labour costs.

Over time, the minimal maintenance demands translate into substantial savings in operational expenses. By eliminating the need for constant upkeep or costly repairs, glass lined steel provides efficient and hassle-free operation.

3. Enhanced Hygiene

Unlike other materials that can absorb contaminants or foster microbial growth, the non-porous glass coating ensures that stored water remains uncontaminated. This makes glass lined steel an ideal choice for potable water storage, where safety and cleanliness are paramount

Additionally, its ability to preserve water quality is invaluable for high-grade process water used in industrial operations. By preventing impurities from leaching into the water, glass lined steel supports consistent and reliable performance in environments that demand stringent quality standards.

4. Long Term Cost-Effectiveness

While glass lined steel requires a higher upfront investment compared to other materials, its long-term cost benefits far outweigh the initial expense. The superior durability and resistance to wear ensure an extended service life. Additionally, its low maintenance requirements keep ongoing costs minimal, delivering substantial savings over time.

Another key advantage is the reduced downtime. Unlike materials prone to corrosion, scaling, or frequent repairs, glass lined steel maintains its structural integrity and performance for years. This reliability minimises disruptions to operations, making it a cost-effective and dependable solution.

5. Customisable

Glass lined steel tanks are available in various sizes and configurations, allowing clients to select the perfect fit for their specific project requirements. Whether it’s a compact tank or a large-capacity solution, these tanks can adapt to any space. To learn more about tank sizing, read our article: What Size Water Tank Do I Need?

Another customisation option is that glass lined steel tanks can be designed to withstand cyclonic wind regions. This makes them the ideal solution for clients setting up storage tanks in Australia’s Wind Regions B, C and D.

Common Applications of Glass Lined Steel Tanks

Glass lined steel tanks are highly versatile and are utilised across a wide range of industries. Here are some of their most common applications:

  • Mining: Ideal for storing process water, potable water, and tailings water in mining camps and processing plants. Resistant to the harsh chemicals and challenging conditions often encountered in resource extraction and processing.
  • Industrial Water Storage: Used in manufacturing plants for storing high-quality process water, cooling water, and wastewater. Their non-porous surface ensures water quality is maintained for operations requiring precision and reliability.
  • Chemical processing: Suitable for storing corrosive or chemically reactive liquids due to their resistance to chemical attack. Often used in industries such as fertilisers, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals.
  • Food & Beverage: Ideal for storing process water or food-grade liquids, as the glass lining prevents contamination and ensures hygiene.

How are Our Glass Lined Steel Tanks Made?

Glass lined steel panels

Our glass lined steel panels are created by fusing porcelain enamel and steel at over 800 °C. This process forms a hard, inert coating that never requires painting. Additionally, the tank’s interior is enhanced by a special coating that incorporates titanium dioxide (TiO₂) for superior strength and durability.

Our unique edge-coat technology also ensures optimal glass encapsulation along all four edges of the tank sheets to enhance corrosion resistance and longevity. Moreover, all sheets are mechanically rounded to specific radii, providing maximum glass adhesion to steel.
