Offshore Tanks Project

May 29, 2024

Allied Pumps was entrusted with replacing multiple rusting tanks installed by another company. Altogether, our team erected a total of five hot dip galvanized painted steel tanks on this remote Australian offshore oil & gas site.

The project presented unique challenges due to the island being in a cyclonic wind region and the nature of the stored substances, which included seawater, sewage, and RO backwash. However, this did not stop the Allied Pumps team from coming up with effective solutions.

The Challenge

The primary challenges revolved around two main factors: 1) the site’s cyclonic wind region and 2) the highly corrosive marine atmosphere and stored substances. The project demanded a meticulous approach and durable materials to ensure structural integrity and longevity despite the harsh environment.

Our Solution

To address these challenges, the Allied Pumps team conducted a thorough site assessment to determine the specific requirements of each tank. Key elements of our solution included:

  1. Upgrading tank components to meet the new specifications. This involved a detailed examination of the existing design and the implementation of necessary modifications to enhance resilience.
  2. Specialized packaging and internal treatment. The new tanks were equipped with specially sealed and painted interiors to mitigate corrosion risks.
  3. Stainless steel (SS) flashings. SS flashings were utilized to provide additional protection against corrosion, especially in areas prone to exposure.
  4. Reinforced structural parts. Minimum 4mm RHS/SHS (Rectangular Hollow Sections/Square Hollow Sections) were employed for tank structural components to ensure robustness and durability.
  5. Stainless steel roofing. SS roofing was chosen for its superior resistance to corrosion in marine environments.
  6. Impact-resistant truss spacing. The truss spacing was optimized to withstand impact from cyclonic winds, ensuring structural stability during extreme weather events.
  7. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was conducted to simulate various environmental scenarios and assess the structural performance of the pipe supports under different conditions.

The Outcome

Despite the challenges encountered during the project, the Allied Pumps team successfully delivered the solution within the agreed-upon time frames. These included complex logistics for getting gear to site, limited flights to the location, and changes to the original scope.

Although adjustments were necessary due to the revised requirements, proactive renegotiation ensured that the project stayed on track. In the end, the client expressed satisfaction with the project and decided to place orders for more tanks.
