Blockages occur fairly regularly at Graylands Hospital, Western Australia’s largest mental health facility. Objects and clothing were often being introduced into the plumbing system. With 1,053 fixtures, the system needed help breaking up these foreign objects. Two of their grinder pumps were not properly handling foreign objects. After much investigation, the most practical option was to install a channel grinder in the existing mechanical screening pit. We designed specialised guiderails from 316 stainless steel. They were built in-house to suit the existing concrete structure. This solved the issue and eliminated peak flow blockages. The system has now been up and running for 24 months with no issues.
The Perth City Link bus port is reconnecting Northbridge with the city centre, extending from the Perth Station to the new Perth Arena. The bus port required sufficient water storage for protection against fire. Delivering water storage in an underground situation is challenging but necessary. We had several hurdles to overcome. Our ultimate solution was to recommend our dual diesel fire protection pump set. This included suction and discharge manifolds combined with dual rectangular steel liner panel tanks. We manufactured the complete fire pumps skid at our production facility, so they could be tested at our test facility. Installing the tanks onsite was then a challenge in the tight confines of the underground plant room. The successful outcome offered a sufficient amount of water that could be dumped quickly in the case of a sudden fire.
Allied Pumps rises to the challenge. Could we produce 20 relocatable bore head works, which could last for a minimum of 20 years and be compliant with wind loading requirements AS1170.2, for a wind region A4 quickly? Being headquarted in Western Australia, with extensive stock holdings, not only do we understand harsh conditions we were able to gear up quickly and meet the clients deadline.
The City of Subiaco had an initiative to improve water quality. The focus was on reducing pollutants in Lake Mabel Talbot. The lake is in the conservation category wetland under the Environment Protection policy and functions as a Water Corporation compensating basin. The lake collects rainfall runoff from four sub-catchments, totaling 300 ha. A Gross Pollutant Trap needed to treat the entire flow prior to entering the system, and our Baffle Box was the only system to appropriately meet the design criteria. The Baffle Box was able to catch leaves and other pollutants before they could enter the lake. The result of this project was cleaner water and an improvement in the water quality.
Royal Perth Hospital is a 450-bed teaching hospital located on the north-eastern edge of the CBD of Perth in Western Australia. The project started with a site visit by us. We measured and discussed the design needs for the fire pump set refurbishment. The first step was to disable and remove the existing system. This removal was the same day as the new system’s delivery so there was no site storage required. The new system was then installed in one day. This was a quick turnaround time, and we were able to meet the timeframe to ensure minimal downtime.
This job represented a challenge as the insurance company who are the insurers of the BUNGE Grain Terminal required that a pumpset built to a North American standard be used on the job, otherwise they would not grant insurance cover. Insurance cover was conditional upon compliance with a standard for the fire pump not commonly used in Australia. This meant that a fire pump had to be specially imported from North America to supply to the fire company fitting out the fire services on site. Allied Pumps were able to work with an overseas Supplier to arrange the build and testing of the fire pump off shore, in a factory in North America, then arrange airfreight of some very heavy packages at considerable cost in order to reduce time lost in transit, to minimise delays in the building construction deadline. A further challenge was that there is NO LOCAL BACK UP for the North American controllers. Allied Pumps was able to rise to the occasion and overcome this challenge by our highly experienced technicians making contact with an overseas electrical technician to gain the knowledge necessary to overcome certain control panel commissioning obstacles. A fine outcome on a very challenging job!
The proposed fibreglass storage tank had an extended lead time of 14 weeks. To ensure schedules were kept, we recommended a galvanised tank, which was a first for us. This was an experience of trial and learning. Everything went smoothly providing the client with a viable solution within the requested timeframe.
Formed in 1905 to obtain, treat and distribute water supplies, the Bunbury Water Board has served the people of Bunbury for over 100 years. The city’s early settlers knew of water stored naturally underground and tried to use it to replace the Collie River and the Preston River, which were the only sources of water for drinking in those days. We supplied the first variable speed system to the water authority. It’s still being used today.
The National Anzac Centre is one of Australia’s most important cultural pilgrimages. Located within Albany’s heritage listed Princess Royal Fortress, the centre overlooks the actual harbour from which over 41,000 men and woman departed Australia for the Great War. The project required a complete sewage system in a short amount of time. The system needed to handle minimal sewage flow but be prepared for high peak loadings. This is often hard to deliver, but our systems delivered a solution to ensure optimal operation.
The Australian Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia required a water supply system. Because of its location, this was a very unique project. The spec required the materials to be stainless steel and fibreglass to resist corrosion. The site also needed a controller to monitor and operate water supply valves to fill tanks for use at the building. The three water supplies were the result of rainwater runoff from the roof, bore pumps and mains piping. To ensure that the specs were met, the valves were programmed to operate depending on the supply availability. The competing requirements of this project as well as working in a foreign environment created a number of challenges. We were able to rise to the challenge, through our strong organisational skills and execution of work.
